Mathew James was born without a hand, and a replacement robotic hand would cost him $57,000, which he couldn't afford. In an attempt to get some funding he wrote a letter to Ross Brawn team principle at Mercedes/Petrons F1. Unfortunately do to contractual obligation the F1 team was unable to provide funding to purchase a bionic hand. However after consulting with Touch Bionics, a leading producer of bionic hands, Mercedes F1 was able to do some information sharing. This information sharing led to production efficiency and allowed Mercedes F1 the opportunity in building a robotic hand for Matthew James.
